The Government of the Republic of Slovenia founded the Geological Survey of Slovenia (GeoZS) in 1946, and after numerous reorganisations, it obtained its current image in 1998. It employs 93 personnel among which are 23 Ph.D.s, 8 M.Sc.s, and 30 B.Sc.). GeoZS carries out fundamental, applied, developmental, and objective researches within all geological branches and related fields of work. It is a renowned research institution in Slovenia as well as abroad.
Researches, professional services and consulting is organised into seven departments:
GeoZS main fields of activity are geological mapping and the production of geological maps, the assessment of geological hazards to living environments, and the assessment of threats to geological environments due to pollution and other anthropogenic factors. They also include seeking, protection and exploitation of water and geothermal resources, study and evaluation of mineral deposits and energy raw materials, preservation of geological heritage and the development of geological knowledge and research methods.
The results of research and consulting work are stored in more than 30.000 professional and research reports. Since 1953, GeoZS has published the main Slovenian geoscientific journal ‘Geologija’. It publishes scientific and professional papers that cover different branches of geology as well as related sciences.
